The Australian climate is one of the most damaging to the skin but its women are some of the most beautiful on the planet! So what do they do differently from the rest of the world?
It’s true Australians are completely obsessed with anti-aging and skin care. We regularly have a national morning tea that celebrates the awareness of over exposing the skin to the sun. Retail stores, cosmetic lines and clothing all dedicated to the merchandise of skin protection!
One thing I’m always advocating is how well Aussies know about preventing skin damage! Just look at our plethora of HOT celebrities for example; Lara Bingle, Dannii & Kylie Minogue, Elle McPherson, Nicole Kidman, Noami Watts and more who all have impeccably flawless skin! Sure some may argue that they’ve had work done – but lets be frank here, there’s only so much work, a plastic surgeon can really do. I don’t want to name the celebrities whose money hasn’t really done much for their bea-eewww-ty but we all know who they are!
1. THE 2 HOUR RULE
If there’s one Aussie no no it’s this – we never expose our skin to more than 2 hours of direct sunlight. Perhaps this is due to the vigorous campaigning driven by the Australian Government in the late 80s / early 90s to every Australian child from age 5 up. Yes it’s been ingrained in us to never stay out in the sun for more than 2 hours – EVEN WITH SUNSCREEN ON!
2. THE SPF IN FOUNDATIONS
Every Australian knows that SPF foundations, (which are largely manufactured in America & Europe) do not provide adequate skin protection. In fact if you told any Australian – hey my foundation protects me from skin damage. We would laugh in your face. Firstly sunscreen needs to be a broad spectrum UVA/UVB formulation with a high sun protection factor (SPF 30+). You would also need to reapply sunscreen because it only lasts on your skin, for a few hours. So if you applied your makeup at 7am – chances are by 9am – it’s useless.
3. WE LOVE A GOOD HAT!
Aussie are famous for their Akubra hat – in fact its even a national icon. But we also love to sport one either at work, out and about and – definitely to the beach!
4. GET UP IN YOUR FACE – EXFOLIATE
Aussies are known for being frank! So one things certain we love to get gritty with things – especially facial exfoliators! Face scrubs and exfoliators are one of the highest selling skin care items in the cosmetic isle! The good news about this is, exfoliating is one of the best things you can do to your skin to stimulate oil production, make your skin glow more and remove dead flaky skin cells!
5. MOISTURISE MOISTURISE MOISTURISE
Unlike most countries, in Australia air conditioning in homes, offices, shopping centres, trains, etc need to be adapted for cooling rather than heating! This means as we spend more time in ventilated spaces, moisture in our skin gets sucked up by giant dehumidifiers constantly around us. So that’s why Australians spend so much money on moisturisers – because their skin is so easily prone to dehydration! The average Australian woman & man moisturises at least twice a day!
